Just 1-2 teaspoons per day in your favorite health drink adds a host of nutritional benefits. Sprinkle the powder on food or use it in your favorite fruit or pie recipe too.
Nutritionally, the mangosteen (Don't confuse with the mango!) can provide us with many vitamins and minerals including folate, B-vitamins, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. Also, like most fruit, there is plenty of fiber found in the mangosteen. It's pretty easy to see why such a fruit is being hailed as the next big thing. On top of being full of the nutrients listed above, there are also reports indicating mangosteen contains valuable phytonutrients, such as xanthonoids which may be beneficial for immune boosting.
The mangosteen plant is an evergreen, erect tree reaching about 30-70 ft in height. It commonly found in tropical rainforests of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines as well as in some cultivated lands in Sri Lanka, and India. The mangosteen tree creates these deep purple colored round shaped fruits. Fully matured fruit measures about 3-7 cm in diameter. Its outer tough rind is about 7-12 mm thick, contains bitter yellow latex that stains clothes black.
Inside the mangosteen fruit you will find several white, soft, fleshy triangular segments as in oranges. Each segment may contain 1-4 off white colored seeds. Seeds are inedible and bitter in taste. The flavor of fruit is sweet, fragrant, and delicious.
